Blog assignment 1

A little bit about me.....

My name is Mary Anderson and I am 29 years old. I was born in Mobile, but moved away at a very young age to the little town of Eufaula, AL. I found my way back to the port city in 2007 and I have loved every minute of it. I share a beautiful home with my fiance' and our two pups, Pepper and Attes. They are our furry children and I honestly love them with my all of my soul :) Hey, just because your children do not walk on 2 legs doesn't mean you're not a Mommy! ha ha ha

Shortly after my move I began working for Providence Hospital and started classes at USA. I was one semester shy of my bachelor's degree when I finally accepted that my true passion is education. I always knew deep down that I wanted to be a teacher but, I also have a love for designer things and well, a teacher's salary just wouldn't cut it for me :) After a lot of soul searching, praying and discussions with mentors I decided that I needed to follow my heart and entered into the world of future educators. This is my first semester taking actual education classes and I'm super excited knowing that my goal isn't so far away.

The above quote is pasted on the front of a milk crate which is snugly placed on a floor to ceiling book shelf in my room. That book shelf has become my favorite part of my home, not because of it's shape or look but because it contains my future and tons of inspiration for my future students. I am fortunate enough to have a silly, four year old nephew with a brain like a sponge to practice many of my findings on. My sister calls me almost daily with some funny story about how he recalls the information to some random person at Target or the grocery store. It just makes it that much clearer to me that I am in the right profession.

Time Management

I enjoyed listening to Dr. Pausch's lecture because he had a few tips on time management that I need to incorporate into my daily life. See, I am currently in the process of becoming a reformed procrastinator. I am so grateful to a dear friend for encouraging me to adopt better time management skills. I also have full faith that EDM 310 will be the final stage in my journey to become better with time management because it is a stay on top of it class and I have every intention of staying ahead to prove that I am capable of managing my time more wisely.

  1. Hi Mary. I'm Emily and I too was far into another major when I decided to change to education. It put me back a little, but I think it will be worth it once I'm a teacher. It seems like you made a good switch and have a true passion for teaching. I agree that this class forces you to stay on top of things or else you will not be successful. Hopefully those time management tips will be useful. Good luck with EDM 310 and with the rest of your education classes!

  2. There's no greater feeling than knowing you made a difference in someone's life, especially a child's. Thank you for your encouragement and kind words.

  3. " 'Teaching should be full of ideas instead of stuffed with facts.' --Unknown Author." I like that!

I expect EDM310 will just be a start on your journey to effective time management! Learning never ends!

  4. Hey Mary! I love the fact that you consider your dogs children because I do as well! Way back in the day I had a Jack Russell named Pepper too. What a coincidence! Changing your major late in the game is hard to do. I also switched to education at a later date compared to most students. But I am so glad that you have found your passion and are working hard towards that goal. Your nephew sounds like he will make a great guinea pig throughout your process of becoming a great teacher. Good luck!
